Thalassemia: Thalassemia disease is a blood disorder. Due to this many children even die. There are many reasons for the occurrence of this disease, in which genetic is also a big factor. Due to thalassemia, there is a lack of blood in the body. This disease is treated for bone marrow transplant. In case of non-availability of this treatment, the patient needs blood transfusion every 20 to 25 days.
To make people aware of this disease, the Pediatric Hematology Department of Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute has organized a free HLA matching camp for the people at Chacha Nehru Children's Hospital, Delhi. Through this camp, the compatibility between the donor and the receiver is ascertained for bone marrow transplant. It costs about ten thousand rupees to get this test done, but about 180 people were tested free of cost in the hospital.
Bone marrow transplant treatment
Dr. Gauri Kapoor, director of the Pediatric Hematology Department at RGCI, said that there is less hemoglobin in the body due to thalassemia. In some patients, it stops being formed. Because of this, the patient needs blood transfusion throughout his life. This disease can be treated only by bone marrow transplant.
For this there is a need to do HLA test. HLA matching is done with parents or siblings of people who have thalassemia disease. If this match happens then only bone marrow transplant is done. MLA matches have been done by the hospital. Children whose samples match in these will be transplanted
Get tested before marriage
Dr. Gauri said that before marriage, the couple should get their genetic counseling done. Thalassemia test should also be done in the first trimester of pregnancy. For this, blood disorder test can be done, which gives information about having thalassemia. This is because if both parents have thalassemia genes, then there is a possibility of this disease in the child as well. The risk of having thalassemia in the child remains up to 25 percent.
