The Hindu New Year starts every year from the Pratipada Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month. Pratipada date of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month is known as Gudi Padwa, Varsha Pratipada and Ugadi. The festival of Gudi Padwa is celebrated with great pomp by the people of Marathi community in Maharashtra. At the same time, Hindu New Year is known by different names in different parts of the country. This is known as Chaitra Pratipada, Gudi Padwa, Nava Samvatsar Ugadi, Cheti Chand and Ugadi. Houses are specially decorated on the festival of Gudi Padwa. The main entrance of the house is decorated with Swastik and Rangoli on this day.
Significance of Gudi Padwa
In Maharashtra, the festival of Gudi Padwa is celebrated as the beginning of the Hindu New Year and a symbol of victory. People of Maharashtra put Gudi in their homes on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada Tithi. For this reason it is called Gudi Padwa. In this, the people of Marathi community take bamboo wood and place the reverse side of silver, copper or brass urn on it. It is decorated with neem leaves, mango leaves and flowers by putting a saffron colored flag in it, then it is placed at the highest place of the house.
Gudi Padwa is known by many names in different parts of the country. The Konkani community in Goa and Kerala celebrate it with the name Samvatsar Padvo. In Karnataka, this festival is known as Ugadi. While in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Gudi Padwa is celebrated as Ugadi. On the other hand, the people of the Hindu community living in Kashmir celebrate this day as Navreh. In Manipur, this festival is celebrated with Sajibu Nongma Panba or Meitei Cheiroba. On the other hand, Chaitra Navratri starts from this day in North and Central India.
Beliefs of Gudi Padwa
1. It is believed that Lord Brahma created the universe on this day only. That's why Gudi is also considered as Brahmadhwaj.
2. People of Marathi community also plant Gudi on this day to remember the victory of the great king Chhatrapati Shivaji.
3. It was on this date that the great astrologer and mathematician Bhaskaracharya composed the almanac, calculating the days, months and years from sunrise to sunset. On this date, the first day of the phase of the moon occurs.
4. It is believed that on this date Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after conquering Lanka, in whose joy it is celebrated as Vijay Parv.
5. It is believed that by planting Gudi on this day happiness and prosperity comes in the house.
