The enemy had made his place on the heights. Indian soldiers were in the lower part. This strategy of the enemy was no less than a powerful weapon in itself. In such a situation, the command to conquer Peak 5140, just above the Srinagar-Leh road, was handed over to Captain Vikram Batra. As per his strategy, he was moving forward one step at a time when the Pakistanis realized this. As a result, firing started from both sides.

During this, Captain Vikram's team killed many enemy soldiers. The enemy could not stand before the passion of the Captain and his team. The team captured the Point 5140 peak at 3.30 am on June 20, 1999. After reaching the peak, he gave a message on the radio and said – Yeh Dil Maange More. The code of this operation was Shershah.

...and got martyred like this

After conquering Point 5140 peak, he was given the responsibility of conquering Point 4875 peak. Reaching this peak was not easy. There were steep climbs on both sides. The enemies had increased the difficulties by creating a blockade. The team started the mission on 7 July.

Handling the front here was no less than chewing iron. The narrow ascent point and the presence of the enemy at such a place in front from where there was a danger of direct attack. Captain Vikram Batra took this challenge in his hands. Moving towards the enemy with full enthusiasm and indomitable courage, the Captain fought hand-to-hand and killed 5 soldiers of Pakistan Army.

He got injured during the scuffle, but did not stop. While hiding and painting on the ground, they came close to the enemy and cleared the way by throwing grenades. Captain Vikram is leading the team and he instilled the same enthusiasm in the team as well.

During the war, when his Subedar tried to help the injured Vikram Batra, he flatly refused to take help. Said- You are childish, step back. After this, the enemy's bullet passed through the body of Captain Vikram and he was martyred. For his indomitable courage, he was posthumously awarded the Paramvir Chakra.
