Why is the unemployment rate of Manipur so scary… know what is the condition of the rural areas of the state?

The Naga, Kuki community in Manipur is very upset with the N Biren Singh government of the state. These tribals say that the government is trying to take away their rights. By taking their land, their right to self-employment is being killed.

Tension remains in Manipur. Army has been deployed in the troubled areas of the state. State Chief Minister Biren Singh himself has admitted that 60 people have died in the violence so far, about 2000 houses have been burnt. Although the curfew implemented in 11 districts of the state has been relaxed and there is no news of violence in the last 24 hours.

By the way, Manipur is restless for no reason at all. Recession and unemployment is a serious problem in this hill state. According to the nationwide employment survey, Manipur is one of the states with the highest unemployment rate. Compared to the national unemployment rate of 4.1 recorded in the year 2021-2022, this state has an unemployment rate of 9 percent.

Unemployment alarming in Manipur

Talking about the rural areas of the state, the unemployment rate here is appalling. Kuki and Naga tribal population lives more in the mountainous region here. On the other hand, most of the Meitei population lives in urban areas. According to the survey, where there is 9.5 percent unemployment in rural areas, 7.6 percent in urban areas.

The latest controversy is going on about this community. Naga and Kuki are opposing the proposal to include Meitei in the Scheduled Castes. According to him, Meiteis are a majority and secondly, they are also prosperous.

At the national level, where 59 percent of men are engaged in self-employment in villages, 65 percent of men in Manipur are living on the basis of self-employment in rural areas. The areas of self-employment are trade, hotels or restaurants, transport, communication and real estate. But there is a slowdown in the business of these sectors. That's why people are facing crisis.

Condition of agriculture in rural areas

Apart from job and self-employment, another major problem of the state is the agriculture system here. According to the information, the administration is not able to fulfill the needs of the farmer's family. The tribal community in rural areas is dependent on agriculture. While the government wants to vacate the land of the tribals, which is being opposed.

Here an area of 3,268 square kilometers is covered with bamboo forests. Manipur is considered as the largest bamboo producing state in India. On the other hand, handloom is the largest cottage industry of Manipur and the state comes in the top five in terms of number of looms in the country.

However, there is no gloom in Manipur in every field. Agricultural activities, especially fish farming etc. have recorded a growth of 4 percent in the year 2020, 9 percent in 2021. There is an estimate of 8 percent in 2023.

What does CM Biren Singh have to say?

Presenting the state budget on the whole situation, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh said, “We had to bear the brunt of the pandemic last year. The pandemic had badly affected the lives and livelihood of the people. The financial condition of the state was a big challenge for us for two consecutive years. We had to face the challenges of the pandemic to run the state."
