Study: Wearing contact lenses increases the risk of cancer, what came out in the new research?

Contact Lenses: According to a report by the English news website The Guardian, fluoropolymers are being used in the US to make contact lenses, which pose a risk of cancer and kidney disease.

Contact Lens Cause Cancer: A recent new research has revealed that many soft contact lenses in America are being made from toxic and cancer-causing chemicals. English news website The Guardian has published a report in this regard. In this research, 18 contact lenses were tested. High concentrations of organic fluorine (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) were found in each lens.

According to the report, this is a class of 14,000 chemicals, which are used in making consumer products. These chemicals are used to make these products water and heat resistant. They are also used in many household items including clothing, packaging and wires. These are also known as forever chemicals as they do not break down naturally.

What did the researchers find?

Researchers at North Carolina State University, Scott Belcher, told The Guardian that these chemicals have been linked to cancer, fetal problems, liver and kidney disease and autoimmune diseases. A 2017 National Cancer Institute study concerned PFAS as a possible human carcinogen, which can cause cancer.

Can Lenses Cause Cancer?

If eye experts are to be believed, they say that it is important to emphasize that this claim is not based on scientific evidence. Contact lenses are typically made from biocompatible materials such as silicone hydrogel or hydrogel polymers, which have been extensively tested to ensure their safety. The silicone hydrogel lens has high oxygen permeability, allowing more oxygen to reach the cornea.

The materials used in contact lenses are rigorously evaluated by regulatory authorities and manufacturers to meet stringent standards. However, eye specialists also recommend that you remove your contact lenses before sleeping. Not doing so can increase the risk of eye infection, lack of oxygen in the cornea and other problems.
