How was Rooh Afza made?

Hakim Abdul Majeed was knowledgeable in Unani medicines and was planning to prepare a drink to save people from heat stroke in summer. He prepared drinks from many Greek and indigenous things. It quickly became popular. In the initial period, when Rooh Afza started being available in the dispensary, people used to go and buy it in utensils. Gradually its packing was fixed.

Its logo was designed in 1910. At that time the printers present in Delhi were not very advanced, so the work of preparing the people was done in Mumbai. A time also came when the dispensary turned into a company. After the death of Abdul Majeez, sons Abdul Hameen and Mohammad Saeed took over the company.

Many Greek herbs were used in the preparation of Rooh Afza. Many things including chixar, grapes, orange, watermelon, rose, kewra were used to make it.

The role of partition in the success of Rooh Afza has been interesting. In 1947, India was partitioned and Pakistan was formed. The eldest son of Abdul Majeed chose India, while the younger brother Mohammad Saeed went to Pakistan. To start another Rooh Afza factory, he started its production by taking two rooms on rent in Karachi. However, Rooh Afza, which was prepared in India, got the most popularity.

The Rooh Afza bottle was designed in Germany. Earlier it was introduced in a glass bottle, later it was changed to plastic.

The journey of Rooh Afza started in India continued, but there came a year when the production of the company was badly affected due to interruption in the import of raw material. Its stock decreased in India in 2019. Rooh Afza gradually launched many products in the market. Products like Safi, Pachnaul and Rogan Badam Shirin were included in this. Its first factory was set up in 1940 in Old Delhi. Then production started in Ghaziabad in 1971 and a new plant was set up in Manesar, Gurugram in 2014.
