In case of non-payment of fine

If caught, a ticketless passenger has to pay a fine of at least Rs 250 along with the actual cost of the ticket. If someone refuses to pay the fine or does not have the money to pay the fine, then such people are handed over to the Railway Protection Force and a case is registered under Section 137 of the Railway Act. The defaulter is then produced before a magistrate, who can impose a fine of up to Rs 1,000. If the person still does not pay the fine, he can be jailed for up to six months.

More than 2.7 crore passengers could not travel

In fact, according to data provided by the Railways, in 2022-23, despite having bought tickets, more than 2.7 crore passengers could not board trains because their names were on the waiting list, indicating a significant shortage of trains on busy routes.
