IPL 2023: Glenn Maxwell, Faf du Plessis stormy innings go in vain, CSK beat RCB by 8 runs

Glorious half-centuries from Glenn Maxwell and Faf du Plessis went in vain as Chennai Super Kings registered an eight-run win over Royal Challengers in Match 24 of IPL 2023 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Monday. Maxwell scored 76 off 36 balls, hitting three fours and eight sixes, while Du Plessis smashed 62 off 33 balls as they came together for a sensational 126-run partnership for the third wicket, helping the Royal Challengers Helped Bangalore recover from 15 runs.

RCB were chasing a lofty target of 227 and came close to the target before being restricted to 218/8 in 20 overs thanks to some fine batting from Maxwell and du Plessis, but lost by eight runs.

The bat dominated the ball in this southern derby, scoring a total of 444 runs in the match, with Chennai Super Kings' Tushar Deshpande emerging as the best bowler with 3-45 in four overs. A combined total of 33 sixes were hit in the two innings as both the teams produced a scintillating display of big-hitting.

Ajinkya Rahane saved eight runs at the boundary and that ended up being the difference between the two teams.

Chasing a mammoth target of 227, Royal Challengers Bangalore got off to a poor start as Virat Kohli was dismissed early. Akash Singh, who came in as an impact player in place of Ambati Rayudu, got out of the ground. Kohli got out after scoring 6 runs.

RCB kept their chances of a successful chase alive with brilliant counter-attacking half-centuries from skipper Faf du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell.

Maxwell hit Akash Singh for two sixes in the third over, before hitting fellow Sri Lankan Mathisha Pathirana for a four and a six off consecutive balls in the eighth over. He hit Ravindra Jadeja for a boundary and then hit Pathirana for back-to-back fours to complete his half-century in 20 balls.

Du Plessis kept the scoring rate going from the other end. He took advantage of Dhoni letting go of a difficult opportunity early in the fourth over to hit Deshpande for two fours and a six and Akash Singh for a six and a four. He brought up his half-century partnership with a six over the long-off boundary off Teekshana and brought up his half-century off 23 balls.

Maxwell continued his power-hitting at the other end, hitting a couple of sixes as he brought up his century partnership in 47 balls, an extraordinary display of shot-making.

Theksana got the breakthrough for CSK when he sent a length ball wide to Maxwell and Dhoni completed a simple catch. Maxwell scored a brilliant 76 off 36 balls and hit three fours and eight sixes.

Faf was dropped by Tixhana on his own ball in the 11th over but was soon caught by Dhoni as he edged Moeen Ali over the top as both the set batsmen were dismissed and CSK clawed their way back into the match. as RCB were reduced to 159/4 in the 14th over.

Shahbaz Ahmed scored 12 off 10 and Dinesh Karthik scored 28 off 14 balls.

With 31 needed off the last two overs, Suyash Prabhudesai pulled Deshpande over the deep midwicket boundary and then scored 19 off the last six balls.
