This is how it started
The Bata company started in the city of Jlin in Czechoslovakia. Shoe-maker Tomas Bata started it with his brother Antonin and sister Ana. Named - T & A Bata Shoe Company. The family had been stitching shoes for many generations. Tomas hired 10 artisans and started making leather shoes. Shoes were selling well but they didn't have much money. In such a situation, he started making canvas shoes.
When demand started increasing
Canvas shoes were cheap and comfortable too. Demand started increasing. Tomas Bata went to America and brought steam-powered machines from there, so that more shoes could be made. By the time of the First World War, apart from Europe, Bata reached the Middle East as well. Thousands of laborers were working in the factories of the company.
Cut the price of shoes in half

Tomas Bata came to India in the 1920s. Rubber and leather were available here cheaply. He saw that the people here did not consider wearing shoes and slippers as compulsory, but lived barefoot. He saw a big market for footwear in the form of India. In 1931, Bata's first factory was set up in Kannagar near Calcutta. Canvas shoes and rubber shoes started being made. Production increased due to demand. Within a few years, a city named Batanagar settled here.
Initially the company sold 3500 pairs of shoes every week in India. By the 1940s, the situation changed a lot. The company was then employing 4000 people. Bata had set foot in India in the 40s itself. Today Bata has settled in the hearts of Indians.
