International Big Cat Alliance will be for tiger, lion, cheetah, India will invest $ 100 million

International Big Cat Alliance: Since the formation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government in 2014, protected areas have also increased. According to the geographical area of the country, this area has increased from 4.90 percent to 5.03 percent.

India has assured an investment of $100 million (over Rs 800 crore) to launch a mega global coalition under its leadership to protect the big cats. The International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) will work towards the conservation of seven big cats – tiger, lion, leopard, snow leopard, puma, jaguar and cheetah . Membership of the alliance will be open to 97 range countries, which may also include other interested nations, international organizations, etc.

According to the information, last month the Government of India has put its proposal before the potential IBCA member countries. It is expected to be launched in India next month. According to environment ministry sources, the alliance was inspired by the arrival of cheetahs from Namibia last year.

Today we have all the big cats

According to the ministry we have got cheetahs, so we are the only country in the world where tigers, lions, leopards, snow leopards and cheetahs are in the wild. We have all the big cats today except the Puma and the Jaguar. Therefore it is only appropriate that India should take the lead in bringing all the Big Cat range countries under one umbrella like the United Nations.

Population of big cats

According to media reports, the population of big cats has increased in India. In this, the number of tigers increased from 2,226 in 2014 to 2,967 in 2018. At the same time, the population of Asiatic lions which was 523 in 2015 has reached 674 in 2022. While talking about leopards, its number was 7,910 in 2014 but in 2022 the number of leopards in India has increased to 12,852. That is, an increase of more than 60 percent has been registered in the population of leopards.

Protected areas also increased after 2014

Protected areas have also increased since the formation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government in 2014. According to the geographical area of the country, this area has increased from 4.90 percent to 5.03 percent. Officials said that there were 740 protected areas in 1,61,081.62 sq km in 2014 and their number is now 981 with an area of 1,71,921 sq km.

Target of doubling the number of tigers

At the same time, there are 52 tiger reserves spread over an area of about 75,000 sq km in 18 states in India. These account for about 75 percent of the global population of wild tigers. According to media reports, the country has achieved the target of doubling the number of tigers in 2018 itself.

IBCA will appoint general secretary

The governance structure of IBCA will consist of a General Assembly of all member states, a Council of at least seven, but not more than 15, member states elected by the General Assembly for a term of 5 years, and a Secretariat. On the recommendation of the Council, the General Assembly shall appoint the IBCA Secretary General for a specific term.
