Spent 7000 crores, but no use… MPs raised questions on the working of e-courts

In the recent budget, the Center had announced a provision of Rs 7000 crore for the third phase of the e-courts project. The MPs have also expressed concern over the pendency of cases in the courts.

The MPs have raised questions on the working of e-courts and have expressed their concern over not working as per their capacity. A parliamentary panel on Friday expressed concern before the Standing Committee on Ministry of Law and Justice on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice that electronic courts (e-courts) are not working to their potential. Many MPs rose above the party line and expressed their concern on this matter.

The panel, headed by BJP's Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Modi, expressed dismay that the government has spent crores of rupees on providing infrastructure for functioning of electronic courts, but they are not working properly. A source told news agency ANI, “The Government of India has spent around Rs 7000 crore on infrastructure, but these courts do not work. We have asked the ministry the reason for this.

The ministry will reply in writing to the committee

It is being told that the ministry will reply to the committee in writing in the next few weeks. Some opposition MPs also asked the officials about the appointment of judges in the state courts, especially the high court. Another source told ANI, "Priority has been given to the appointment of Supreme Court judges, while appointment of judges to the High Courts has been selective and inconsistent."

Expressed concern even after pending cases

Sources said that the MPs have also expressed concern over the pendency of the cases. The panel has said that about 35 per cent vacancies in the appointment of judges in cases is a major concern. The panel met on Friday to discuss the demands for grants of Budget 2023 before the start of the second part of the session on March 13. Several senior officials of the law ministry, including the law secretary, secretary of the department of justice, and the registrar of the Supreme Court were among those who appeared before the committee.
