The historical temple Baba Prithvinath situated in Khargupur of Gonda district was established by Pandu son Bhima.
The Archaeological Department has confirmed the Shivling established here to be the largest Shivling in Asia.

The month of Sawan is dear to Lord Bholenath. In this episode today we are going to talk about the establishment of the biggest Shivling. The historical temple Baba Prithvinath situated in Khargupur of Gonda district was established by Pandu son Bhima. It is said that when Bhima killed a demon named Bakasura during his exile, he established a Shivling to get rid of that sin and atonement by worshiping Lord Bholenath. The Shivling established in the Prithvinath temple is considered to be the largest Shivling in Asia. This temple of Lord Bholenath has been the center of faith of devotees for hundreds of years and not only Gonda, people from many nearby districts reach here and perform Jalabhishek of Lord Bhole and wish for their happiness and prosperity.

Jagdamba Prasad Tiwari, the chief priest of the temple, tells that in the month of Sawan, thousands of people reach here every day and have darshan of Lord Bholenath. On Monday, this crowd reaches into the number of lakhs. The historical Prithvinath temple located in Khargupur is said to be about 5 thousand years old. It is believed that when Pandu's son Bhima was on exile along with his five brothers, during that time he took refuge in a chakra city. There used to be a demon named Bakasura who used to eat one person from the village people every day. One day when the number of the family who gave shelter to Bhima came, he himself went to Bakasura to become food instead of that family and while fighting there, Bhima killed Bakasura. In order to get rid of the sin that he had incurred due to the killing of Bakasura, he established Shivling and atonemented for his sin by worshiping Lord Bholenath. This Shivling is said to be of ancient times. However, with time, this temple of Lord Mahadev gradually became dilapidated and later this Shivling established by Bhima gradually got absorbed in the ground.

Shivling found in excavation for house construction

Later, with the permission of Raja Guman Singh of Khargupur, Prithvi Singh, a resident of here, started excavation for the construction of the house. On the same night it was found in the dream that the Shivling of the seven blocks was buried below. After this, Prithvi Singh got the entire mound re-excavated, where a huge Shivling emerged. After this, Prithvi Singh started worshiping after the Havan. Since then its name became famous as Prithvinath Temple and became the center of faith of a large number of people. The five and a half feet high Shivling established in the temple is made of black and rare stones. People believe that worshiping here with a sincere heart and performing Jalabhishek gives desired results.

Archaeological Department confirms to be Asia's largest Shivling

The Shivling established in the historical Badrinath temple is considered to be the largest Shivling in Asia. The Archaeological Department has also confirmed the Shivling to be the largest Shivling in Asia. In fact, about three decades ago, the then MP of the district, Kunwar Anand Singh, had written a letter to the Archaeological Department to investigate the mythology of this temple. When the Archaeological Department team reached here on the letter of the MP and examined the Shivling, it was found in the investigation that the Shivling is the largest Shivling in Asia, which dates back to the Mahabharata period, 5000 years ago.
