When is ashura

This time Muharram started from 31st July. Therefore Ashura is on 09 August i.e. Tuesday. Apart from this, Ashura is also on 09 August in Pakistan and Bangladesh. In some other countries like Saudi Arabia, Iraq, United Arab Emirates and many other countries, Muharram started from 30 July. Therefore Ashura will be celebrated there on 08th August.

Historical significance

Hazrat Imam Hussain was the younger grandson of the founder of Islam, Hazrat Muhammad. His martyrdom took place on the 10th day of Muharram or on the day of Ashura. Hazrat Imam Hussain gave martyrdom along with 72 companions to protect his Islam. His family was also involved in this. Muharram is celebrated in memory of this sacrifice. It has been told in history that on the 10th of the month of Muharram, there was a battle of Karbala between Imam Hussain and Yazid's army. Karbala is a city in Iraq.

Tazia is extracted

On the day of Ashura, people of the Shia community of Islam take out Tazia. Weeds are celebrated by taking out Tazia. At the place where the tomb of Hazrat Imam Hussain is built, a procession is taken out by making a similar type of Tajia. People mourn in this procession. Those who participate in the procession wear black clothes. While mourning, people say that Ya Hussain, we did not happen. It means that Hazrat Imam Hussain, we are all sad. We were not with you in the battle of Karbala, otherwise we too would have sacrificed our lives to protect Islam.
