Shravan Kumar brought his parents to Haridwar by sitting in Kanwar,
while some people say that Shravan Kumar had first traveled to Kavad in Tretayuga. It is said that Shravan Kumar was in Una region of Himachal in order to make his parents pilgrimage where his blind parents expressed their desire to take bath in the Ganges in Mayapuri i.e. Haridwar. To fulfill this wish of his parents, Shravan Kumar brought his parents to Haridwar by sitting in Kanwar and got them bathed in the Ganges. On his return he also took Gangajal with him. This is considered to be the beginning of the Kanwar Yatra.

Shri Ram performed Jalabhishek in Babadham,
according to the beliefs, Lord Ram was the first Kanwariya. He had done Jalabhishek of Shivling in Babadham by filling Gangajal in Kanwar from Sultanganj in Bihar.

Ravana did Jalabhishek by filling water in Kanwar,
while according to the Puranas, the tradition of Kanwar Yatra is related to churning of the ocean. Lord Shiva's throat turned blue due to drinking the poison that came out of the churning of the ocean and he was called Neelkanth, but the negative effects of the poison surrounded Shiva. To free Shiva from the negative effects of poison, his exclusive devotee Ravana meditated. After that, after filling water in Kanwar, Ravana performed Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva in the Shiva temple located at 'Pura Mahadev'. Due to this Shiva was freed from the negative effects of poison and from here the tradition of Kanwar Yatra started.
