ISL 7: Mumbai City FC in final for the first time, beating FC Goa 6-5 in a penalty shootout

Mumbai City FC (Mumbai City FC) made it to the finals of the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) for the first time on Monday.
Mumbai beat FC Goa (FC Goa) 6-5 in a penalty shootout in the second leg of the first semi-final of the seventh season played at GMC Steadim in Bombolim. The first leg of the first semi-final between Mumbai and Goa was a 2–2 draw. In the second leg of the first semi-final, the score remained equal till the scheduled time. After this, 30 minutes of extra time was added. The penalty shootout was resorted to after not scoring a goal, where Mumbai defeated Goa 6-5.

The shootout was also very interesting. On the first five occasions, both teams could score 2–2 goals. After this, both got five more opportunities but here Mumbai made a difference. On the first 3-3 occasions, both teams scored goals but after the Goa player missed the fourth chance, Rowlin Borges scored the winning goal for Mumbai. However, there was stiff competition between the two teams for the first 15 minutes. However, four minutes later, Vignesh Dakshinamurthy of Mumbai City FC was shown the first yellow card of the match.

There was no dent in the defense in the first half

In the 26th minute, Albatre Noguera tried to take the ball in his possession, but George Artiz was found offside. In the very next minute, Goa missed the opportunity to take the lead. FC Goa also made a great move in the 34th minute. But this time too, captain and goalkeeper Amarinder Singh saved Ortiz's shot brilliantly and kept Mumbai in the match. Both the teams tried their best to keep each other's goalkeepers ahead, but they could not make a dent in each other's defense and the first half remained goalless. This season, both teams failed to score a goal in the first half for the ninth time.

The goal could not be achieved even till the time of injury

In the second half, Gohan landed with Ishan Pandita in place of Radeem. In the 55th minute, Sevier Gama hit a superb shot from outside the box on Idu Bedia's assist. But Amarinder saved Goa from taking the lead in the same way and prevented him from taking the lead. Amarinder again failed another attack in Goa in the 62nd minute and did not let Mumbai fall behind in the match. Mumbai was also trying to take the lead and in the same attempt, Hugo Boumas made a good move in the 70th minute, but he could not succeed in it.

However, both teams could not take the lead till the scheduled time and the match went on in injury time. Mumbai City FC and FC Goa could not take the lead in the four-minute injury time. After this, two more half-15 minutes were added as extra time. In extra time, Mumbai's Mander Rao Desai received a yellow card. But even in the first half of extra time, the defense wall of the teams remained standing and did not score goals. In the second half, Goa goalkeeper Dheeraj Singh was injured in an effort to make a great save. However, he then stood up and stood as a wall of the Gaurs.

Mumbai won the shootout

Goa however later fielded Naveen Kumar as the goalkeeper in place of Dheeraj. Even in 30 minutes of extra time, both teams could not score goals and the match went into penalty shootout. In the penalty shootout, Mumbai City FC replaced Furba Lachenpa as Amarinder as the goalkeeper. In the penalty shootout, Mumbai City FC scored goals for Ogbeche, Rainier Fernandes, Renwed, Matorda Fal, Mandar Rao Desai and Rawlins Borges. At the same time, Igor Angulo, Ivan Gonzalez, Ishan Pandita, George Ortiz and Adil Khan scored for FC Goa.
