New Zealand defeated West Indies by an innings and 134 runs on the fourth day in the first Test match played in Hamilton. Before lunch on the fourth day, the hosts won after the partnership of Jermaine Blackwood (104) and Alzarri Joseph (86) broke. With this victory, New Zealand took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
This is New Zealand's biggest Test win against the West Indies. Earlier in 1999, New Zealand had won by an innings and 105 runs in the match played in the Basin Reserve of Wellington.
The West Indies had lost 6 wickets for a total of 89 runs in the second innings and New Zealand had a chance to win in three days by bowling them allout twice in one day. But Blackwood and Joseph did not allow this to happen with the partnership of 155 runs.
Neil Wagner got Blackwood and Kyle Jamison took the wickets of Joseph, leading the West Indies to 247 runs in the second innings.
New Zealand, batting first, declared 519 runs for the loss of 7 wickets, thanks to captain Kane Williamson's innings of 251 runs. In response, West Indies were all out for 138 in the first innings on the third day. After this, the guest team went to play followon.
Williamson was adjudged Man of the Match for playing the best innings of his Test career.
