Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad of Kuwait dies at age 91

KUWAIT CITY: The
current ruler of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Sabah, has died at the age of 91 on Tuesday. Sheikh of Kuwait had been undergoing treatment at a US hospital since July. Sheikh Sabah was America's closest leader after the 1990 Gulf War. After his death, the temporary power of the country was given to his younger brother Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmed Al Saba. Expressing grief over his demise, Prime Minister Modi said that India has lost a close friend today.

It is learned that his health suddenly deteriorated in 2019 and he was then undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kuwait. He was admitted to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota by the US Air Force's C-17 Globemaster in July for surgery. Born in 1929, Sheikh Saba was known as the architect of modern Kuwait's foreign policy. He served as foreign minister for about 40 years, from 1963 to 2003, before becoming prime minister. He became the emir of Kuwait in January 2006 after the death of Sheikh Jabir al-Saba.

Sheikh Sabah also worked for a diplomatic solution to the dispute between Qatar and other Arab countries, and that effort is still being appreciated today. He became the richest man in Kuwait in 2006. In 1990, Iraqi forces invaded Kuwait. The United States has since repulsed Iraqi forces. Kuwait is then America's ally.
