The mythological tale of Savitri and Satyavan is important in the story of Vat Savitri Vrat. According to the legend, in ancient times, King Ashwapati of Madra country and his wife Malvi desired the birth of a daughter. They performed long penance to get a daughter and Goddess Savitri appeared before them and blessed them that they would give birth to a radiant girl. After some time, his wife gave birth to a beautiful girl who was named Savitri. When she became of marriageable age, she decided to choose her husband herself and while wandering in the forest, she saw Satyavan, the son of an ascetic, and decided to marry him.

After marriage, both of them started living happily. One day, while cutting wood, Satyavan suddenly fainted and died. On the strength of her strong determination and penance, Savitri resolved to ask Yamraj for Satyavan's life back. When Yamraj started walking with Satyavan's soul, Savitri also started following him. Impressed by her devotion and loyalty, Yamraj asked her to ask for a boon. Savitri first asked for the boon of her father-in-law's eyesight and kingdom back. Yamraj granted this boon.

Then Savitri asked for the boon of becoming the mother of a hundred sons. Yamraj granted this boon too, but Savitri said that how would she fulfill this boon without a husband. Finally, Yamraj brought Satyavan back to life and blessed both of them with long life. This story of love and loyalty of Savitri and Satyavan is still celebrated by women in the form of Vat Savitri Vrat. Women worship the Vat tree, tie a thread around it and pray for the long life of their husband and the well-being of the family.
