Big action in electricity KYC scam, instructions to block 392 mobile phones

Taking action against the fraud in updating electricity KYC, the Department of Telecommunications has directed to block 392 mobile phones used in cyber crime and financial fraud across the country on the basis of IMEI.

According to an official statement, the Department of Telecommunications has initiated the process of blocking these phones keeping in mind the safety of the people in response to reports of fraudulent activities involving mobile numbers in the electricity KYC update scam.

Identification of five suspicious numbers

Victims had reported a few cases of their phones being compromised and taken under control using SMS and WhatsApp messages related to updating electricity KYC and malicious APK files. The telecom department used the Chakshu portal for reporting and analysing fraudulent activities, which initially identified five suspicious numbers.

Use of 392 handsets

According to the statement, Artificial Intelligence (AI) based analysis of this portal revealed that 392 handsets linked to 31,740 mobile numbers were used in these fraudulent activities. The department has directed all telecom service providers to block these handsets across the country on the basis of IMEI.

Handset blocked

Along with this, the Department of Telecommunications has also directed the companies to re-verify the 31,740 mobile connections connected to these mobile handsets. If these numbers are found to be wrong in the re-verification, they will be immediately cancelled and the concerned handset will also be blocked. The department has also appealed to vigilant and alert citizens to report suspicious fraudulent communications through the Chakshu-Report Suspicious Fraudulent Communication facility on the Sanchar Sathi portal.
