Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has received a big setback from the Supreme Court. He had filed a petition to extend his interim bail, which has been rejected. The court registry refused to accept Kejriwal's plea. Since Kejriwal has been given the freedom to go to the trial court for regular bail, Kejriwal's plea is not admissible for hearing. CM Kejriwal will now have to surrender on June 2.
Kejriwal was granted interim bail by Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Dipankar Dutta on May 10 and was asked to surrender at Tihar Jail on June 2. The bench had reserved its verdict on May 17 on a plea challenging the legality of his arrest by the ED in the PMLA case. On Tuesday, another Supreme Court bench also refused to hear Kejriwal's plea and asked him to approach CJI DY Chandrachud.
What did Kejriwal say in the petition?
Arvind Kejriwal had requested the Supreme Court to extend the interim bail period by seven days to undergo several medical tests due to his sudden weight loss of 6 to 7 kg. Kejriwal had said in his petition filed on May 26 that he wanted to surrender on June 9 instead of June 2, the date set by the court to return to jail.
The petition said that he has lost 6 to 7 kg of weight and his ketone level is very high, which is a possible indicator of kidney, serious heart disease and even cancer. The petition said that the Chief Minister needs to undergo some medical tests including PET-CT scan. Through PET-CT scan i.e. Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography test, detailed pictures of the organs and tissues of the body are taken.
On May 10, the apex court had granted Kejriwal interim bail for 21 days till June 1 to campaign for the Lok Sabha elections, according to which he has to return to jail on June 2. Kejriwal was arrested in a money laundering case related to the excise policy scam. The court had directed that Kejriwal surrender on June 2. A day before this, the seventh and final phase of voting is to be held.
What is the allegation of ED
The ED has made Kejriwal's party Aam Aadmi Party an accused in the alleged liquor scam case in Delhi. The ED has told the court that AAP's national convenor Arvind Kejriwal and the party were involved in the alleged scam. The ED has alleged that Arvind Kejriwal is the main conspirator of the scam, which also involves other AAP leaders and private individuals.
