The opposition party in Maldives is preparing to remove President Mohammad Muizzu from the chair. Opposition parties Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and The Democratic Party have decided to remove Muizzu through an impeachment motion. The party is now mobilizing MPs. Muizzu's chair is in danger. Many countries including China are keeping an eye on the political developments in Maldives due to the recent clash in Parliament and the impeachment.
In such a situation, the question is that considering the present situation, will the opposition be able to remove Moizzu from the chair of the President? Do the opposition parties have sufficient number of MPs? What is the procedure to remove the President through impeachment motion in Maldives? Know the answers to these questions.
Mathematics of numbers… How much power does the opposition have?
The largest opposition party in Parliament, MDP, is bringing an impeachment motion against Muizzu in partnership with the other party, the Democrats. The Parliament of Maldives is called People's Majlis. In 2019, the number of members in the Parliament here used to be 87, but later it changed and the number has been reduced to 80.
Now let us understand multiplication and mathematics. The opposition party MDP, which brought the impeachment, has 43 MPs and former President Mohammad Nasheed's The Democrats has 13 MPs. In this way, including both, they have a total of 56 MPs.
The Constitution of Maldives says that to bring impeachment against the President, two-thirds of the number i.e. 54 MPs is required. Both the opposition parties claim that they have 56 members which is a sufficient number.
plot twist
Meanwhile, Maldives news portal Avas has claimed that 12 MDP MPs have joined the ruling People's National Congress (PNC). As a result, now they are left with 44 MPs. At the same time, in media reports, PNC Speaker Mohammad Aslam has claimed that 13 MDP MPs have taken membership of our party.
In such a situation, the question is whether the opposition will be able to win the trust of its MPs who had gone to Muizzu's party People's National Congress and bring them back. If this happens then Muizzu will have to leave the post of President.
The big question is whether the number of MPs that the opposition party is claiming will vote against Muizzu during the main impeachment process or not, it will also be interesting to see.
How is an impeachment motion brought?
The impeachment motion brought against the President in Maldives will be presented before the Speaker. For this, the opposition parties bringing the proposal will have to give notice two days in advance. At the time of notice, it is necessary to have the support of one-third of the MPs along with the opposition.
The debate takes place 14 days after the Speaker is impeached, during which the presence of MPs is necessary. The person against whom the impeachment motion has been brought is given 30 minutes to present his side out of the total debate of 3 hours. After this voting takes place. It is necessary for two-thirds of MPs to be present in voting. The matter of voting is sent to a committee of 7 members. After this it is sealed.
