From paddy cultivation to bamboo craftsmanship, know who received the Padma Shri award.


On the occasion of January 26, 33 people will be honored with the Padma Shri award. The government has released the list of people to be honored with Padma Shri. This also includes the name of Satyanayan Belleri, a farmer from a village in Karnataka, who had taken the responsibility of conserving about 650 varieties of paddy.

Before the Republic Day, the names of Padmashree awardees were announced, in which unsung personalities who have contributed in various fields were selected. Among these personalities, Satyanarayan Belleri, a farmer from village Kasargod in Karnataka, will be honored for his important contribution in the agriculture sector. Apart from these, Jordan Lepcha of Sikkim has been selected for this legendary award in reference to his amazing work of bamboo craftsmanship.

Satyanarayan Belleri, a farmer from village Kasaragod in Karnataka, will be honored with Padma Shri. Satyanarayan Belleri has turned towards the conservation of traditional paddy crops and their seeds. Rajakayama is a similar crop which requires less water. He has developed his own innovative method of preservation by growing paddy in polybags. Presently he is conserving more than 650 traditional varieties mainly from Kerala and Karnataka. Along with the traditional varieties of paddy, he is also conserving important traditional varieties of betel nut, nutmeg, black pepper and jack. Apart from this, he is an expert in beekeeping and is adept in grafting/budding of plants.

Thus, Satyanarayana is attempting to preserve this seed heritage with single-minded devotion, that too without any monetary return. Satya Narayana's application for the Plant Genome Rakshak Kisan Award (2018-19) was documented by Dr. Raji Vasudev Namboodiri, Assistant Professor, College of Agriculture, Padanakkad and processed by IPR, Cell, Kerala Agricultural University. This award was presented to Satyanarayana Belleri for the year 2018-19 as a result of the joint efforts of IPR Cell, KAU and College of Agriculture, Padannakkad. He received Rs 1.50 lakh, citation and memento from PPV&FRA, New Delhi.

Bamboo craftsman Jordan Lepcha

50 year old Jordan Lepcha has also been honored with the Padma Shri award. He has been honored with this legendary award in reference to his amazing work of bamboo craftsmanship. Jordan mainly produces hats with different designs using bamboo. They live in Mangan city from Sikkim and it is present in the northern region of the state. Jordan has been trying to preserve traditional Lepcha weaving and bamboo craft work for the last 25 years. Playing the role of a trainer, he has taught this skill to more than 150 youth.

The special thing is that today most of them run their own households by setting up their own bamboo crafts. Due to the tireless efforts of Jordan, who works as a farmer and carpenter, most of the youth in Sikkim are earning their living through this work. Let us tell you that apart from Sikkim and West Bengal of India, residents of Lepcha community also live in Eastern Nepal, Western Bhutan and Tibet. Lepcha is one of the major tribes of India. Most of the Lepchas in Sikkim do bamboo crafts and run their own households.

Know how Padmashree award is given

To receive Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan or Padma Vibhushan award, one has to apply oneself. It includes doing good work in fields like art, culture, sports, medicine, social work, science and engineering, public works, civil services, trade and industry. If any person feels that he has done some good work in any of these fields, then he can apply for this award. All the applications received for the award are placed before the award committee. After this the Prime Minister, Home Minister and President give their approval on it. This award is announced every year on 26 January. This year, on the occasion of 75th Republic Day, some names have been selected who will be given the Padma Shri Award. This year 33 people will be honored with Padma Shri.
