75% attendance of doctors is mandatory, admission will be done on 150 seats, this is the new rule for opening medical college

New notifications were issued by NMC regarding the opening of new medical colleges. The new rule will be implemented from next year. The number of seats for admission in new colleges has also been reduced. At the same time, 75% attendance of doctors has been made mandatory.

The National Medical Commission has notified new rules for the establishment of undergraduate medical colleges in the country, in which the maximum number of MBBS students has been fixed at 150 instead of the existing 250 seats. The new rules will apply to colleges to be established from the 2024-25 academic session. At present a new UG Medical College is permitted to admit 100 to 150 MBBS students and increase the number to a maximum of 250. These have been reduced in the new rule.

The 2023 rules of NMC states that for the establishment of new undergraduate medical education colleges, applications will be allowed for only 50/100/150 seats from 2024. Colleges seeking increased number of seats cannot exceed a total of 150 MBBS students by 2024-25.

Medical college can be opened in two premises

Simplifying establishment norms, the NMC has allowed medical colleges (which must have teaching hospitals and hostels for students and trainees) to have two campuses, more than half an hour's walk apart, instead of the currently mandated one. Join me To prevent the disproportionate growth of colleges, the NMC said that medical colleges will have to follow a ratio of 100 MBBS seats for 10 lakh population in a state or union territory. The previous large sanctioning of medical colleges in some states led to rapid growth of institutions in southern and western India, reducing the number of colleges in the northern states.

This will be the new faculty

According to a report in The Tribune, one of the 21 departments mandated for a new medical college will be a new department of integrative medical research to combine contemporary and traditional medicine such as the AYUSH system. A yoga department is also recommended, although it is not mandatory. The Department of Radio Oncology remains elective. The departments of emergency medicine and respiratory medicine, mandated under the 2020 Rules, are not included in the list of 21 departments mandated under the 2023 Rules.

75% attendance mandatory

The new rules have come into force immediately after notification. Minimum 75 percent attendance has been made mandatory for doctors and staff on all working days except holidays. A daily Aadhaar-enabled biometric attendance system (AEBAS) for faculty and support staff, preferably with face recognition, will be made available in the form of a daily attendance dashboard on the NMC as well as the Medical College website, as per rules.
