IIT Bombay Admission 2023: Option to change branch closed, relief to 1st year students

IIT Bombay New Rules:
With the closure of branch changing option, the number of seats will also increase. This will directly benefit the first year students taking admission in IIT Bombay.

IIT Bombay Admission: A big decision has been taken by the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. To reduce the stress on first year students, the board has decided to remove the option of changing branch at the end. According to IIT Bombay, the pressure of getting high grades to earn a branch change was causing stress on many students.

Additionally, the institute has also decided to reduce the syllabus per semester in the first year to further reduce the academic load. This is going to provide direct relief to the students of 1st year.

Decision in Senate meeting of IIT Bombay

The decision was taken in the 256th meeting of the Senate held on Friday, in which several proposals were discussed to reduce the academic stress on first-year students. IIT Bombay will be the first from the group of IITs in the first semester to take such a decision. This decision has been taken after the incident of death of first year student Darshan Solanki by suicide.

Who will get benefit?

This decision was made on the basis of the observation that the pressure of getting high grades to earn branch changing was causing stress on many students. While only a few were benefited by the change of branch. The option to change branch will be applicable from 2023 batch. Students now have to carefully select the branch they want to join.

In some popular branches the number of seats can be increased at the time of admission. Another important decision taken by the Senate was to reduce the academic load on the students by reducing one course per semester in the first year. Thus students who find it difficult to cope with the academic load will have more time to work towards their courses.
