Smart City Mission: The Central Government has extended the deadline of the Smart City Mission by one year to June 2024. Under this, a target has been set to make 100 selected cities smart. This project was to be completed by June 2023 but the government estimates that it is not possible to complete the entire work in two months.
According to the report received by the Ministry of Urban Development, 50 out of 100 cities have completed 75% of the work. 80% work has been done in many big cities. The pace of work in small towns is extremely slow. Hardly 66 percent work has been completed here. About 1850 crore rupees are being spent every month on this project. In many cities, due to various reasons, more money has been spent than the fixed budget.
So many crores given so far
71 thousand crore rupees have been given so far in the smart city project. Out of this, 38 thousand crore rupees have been collected by the central government and the remaining amount by the state governments and urban bodies. 90% of the allocated budget has been spent. For the current financial year 2023-2024, eight thousand crore rupees have been approved in the budget. The government believes that the target will be met with this amount.
The Ministry has decided that a document will be prepared on the lessons learned so far, best practices and new experiments from the Smart City Mission, so that the mistakes that happened in it do not happen further. This will not only save time but it will be easy to save money as well. It has also been decided to disseminate this document to those cities of the country where work is to be done under this project in the next phase.
When did the Smart City Mission start?
The Central Government started the Smart City Mission in the year 2015. Hundred cities were selected between 2016 and June 2018. Five years were given from the date of selection to complete the schemes of the selected cities. Accordingly, the work of all the cities should have been completed by June 2023.
