India is slowly becoming a manufacturing hub for Apple products. After the start of manufacturing of Apple iPhone, very soon AirPod will also start being made here. For this, Foxconn is going to set up a plant at a cost of around Rs 1,650 crore ($200 million).
iPhone maker Apple is continuously reducing its dependence on China for manufacturing. Due to this, its largest contract manufacturer company Foxconn first started manufacturing iPhone in India. Now the company plans to make AirPod in India as well. For this, it is also going to set up a plant in India at a cost of about Rs 1,650 crore.
The agency has reported quoting sources aware of the matter that Foxconn has received an order from Apple to make Airpods. This is the first time that Foxconn has received an order to make Airpods. Currently, many Chinese suppliers manufacture Apple Airpods together.
Foxconn will set up plant in Telangana
The source informed that Foxconn will invest more than $ 200 million, or about Rs 1,650 crore, on the Airpod plant. The company can set up this plant in Telangana state of India. However, it is not yet clear how many airpods the company has received orders to make.
Foxconn's subsidiary company Foxconn Interconnect Technologies Limited may start construction of Airpod manufacturing factory in Telangana in the second half of this year. While the production of Airpods may start as early as 2024.
Apple said to set up a plant in India
The source said that the recommendation to set up an Airpod manufacturing plant in India was made by the Apple company itself. However, Foxconn was hesitant before taking the order to make Airpods due to the low margin.
A source said on the condition of anonymity that there was a debate between the executives of the Taiwanese company Foxconn for several months about whether to take the order to make Airpods, because the margin in it is very low. But in the end the company decided to further strengthen its link with Apple.
