Generally, there is mild cold in the month of February across the country, but this year the temperature of February surprised everyone.

There is already a heatwave-like situation in some areas of states like Gujarat, Maharashtra. In Gujarat's Kutch, the temperature had reached 37-39 degree Celsius. There is a similar situation in Maharashtra as well. The Meteorological Department said that the temperature is expected to be above normal in most parts of the country, while the weather is likely to be fine in the southern peninsula and parts of Maharashtra.

This year was the warmest February since 1877

SC Bhan, head of IMD's Hydromet and Agromet Advisory Services, said during a virtual press conference that there is less chance of heat wave in March but heat wave-like conditions may prevail in April and May. Bhan said that after 1877, the maximum temperature was recorded in February. He said that this is the result of the increasing trend of global warming phenomenon.

World in the era of global warming

At the same time, when he was asked whether this high temperature is a sign of climate change, in response he said, the whole world is in the era of global warming. We are living in a warming world. Bhan said that the average rainfall across the country is likely to be normal (83-117 per cent) in March. Based on the data for 1971-2020, the LPA of rainfall over the country during March is about 29.9 mm.

Below normal rain expected

He said that most areas of northwest India, west-central India and parts of east and northeast India are expected to receive below normal rainfall. Above normal rainfall is very likely over most parts of Peninsular India, East-Central India and isolated places over Northeast India.
