On June 14 last year, the government announced the Agneepath scheme to recruit soldiers in all three services (Army, Navy and Air Force). The scheme provides an opportunity to serve in the armed forces for a period of four years.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday interacted with the Agniveers who were part of the initial teams under Agneepath, a short-term scheme for army recruitment through video conferencing . Defense Minister Rajnath Singh also participated in this dialogue programme. During this, PM Modi congratulated the Agniveers. He said that this policy will prove to be a game changer in strengthening our armed forces and preparing them for future challenges. The PM has claimed that young Agniveers will make the armed forces more tech-savvy.

Appreciating the capability of Agniveers, he said that the spirit of Agniveers reflects the bravery of the armed forces which have always kept the nation's flag flying high. The experience they will gain from this opportunity will be a source of pride for a lifetime. New India is full of new enthusiasm and efforts are on to modernize our armed forces as well as make them self-reliant.

He said that the way of fighting war is changing in the 21st century. Technologically advanced soldiers will play an important role in our armed forces. The present generation of youth especially has this potential and therefore Agniveer will play a leading role in our armed forces in times to come. The PM said that he is looking forward to seeing women Agniveers in all the three services. The Prime Minister also recalled how women are leading the armed forces on various fronts, citing examples of women soldiers posted in Siachen and women piloting modern fighter aircraft.

On June 14 last year, the government announced the Agneepath scheme to recruit soldiers in all three services (Army, Navy and Air Force). The scheme provides an opportunity to serve in the armed forces for a period of four years. Under this scheme, the youth joining the army will be named Agniveer. However, after four years, only 25 per cent of the jawans from each batch will be retained in their respective services for a period of 15 years. Opposition parties have criticized the exercise but the government has said it will make the armed forces more youthful and meet its current needs.
