Tomato Flu: Tomato flu is spreading again, how dangerous will it be?

This infection is given the name tomato flu because red blisters appear on the body of an infected child. 
So far, Kerala has the highest number of cases of this disease in the country.

Amidst the threat of corona and monkeypox , cases of tomato flu in children have started appearing again. So far 82 children have been infected with this flu in Kerala. All the infected are under five years of age. According to the medical journal The Lancet Respiratory Journal, this flu started spreading in Kerala in May. Since then cases are being registered continuously. Tomato flu is a contagious disease, which can spread from one child to another. There is no information about the cause of the spread of this flu. Although it is believed to be a disease caused by Chikungunya or any virus.

This infection is given the name tomato flu because red blisters appear on the body of the infected child, which keep on growing slowly. Its symptoms include high fever, body aches, joint swelling and fatigue. Like chikungunya, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, dehydration, joint swelling and body aches can also be seen in some cases.

According to the Lancet, due to the outbreak of this disease in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have also been alerted. At the same time, 26 children (1-9 years of age) have been reported to be infected with it at the Regional Medical Research Center in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. It is a matter of relief that till now, apart from Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Odisha, its cases have not been registered in any other state of the country.

What is dangerous tomato flu

According to Dr. Meena J of Pediatrics Department of Aakash Hospital, it is an infectious disease. The most common of its symptoms is fever. After this, red rash appears on the body, in which the kind of substance can be filled. If these symptoms are seen in a child, then immediately consult a doctor. Keep the child in isolation. Do not touch his rash and keep giving liquid diet to the child at regular intervals. Do not let the body lack water. Keep the infected child away from other children in the house.

Regarding the danger of tomato flu, senior physician Dr. Kavaljit Singh says that the first case of tomato flu came on May 6 in Kollam district of Kerala. Since then only two or three states have reported its cases. Not much is known about it, but it is not fatal. There has also been no statement from the Ministry of Health regarding this disease. This can be easily controlled by timely identification of symptoms and isolating the infected. So there is no need to panic.

Be cautious with low immunity

According to the World Health Organization, children who have low immunity are suffering from dehydration and abdominal pain due to this flu. Therefore, if a child is already sick, then his parents should take special care.
