The country is celebrating the 75th anniversary of independence and the pin code i.e. Postal Identification Number has completed its 50 years. It was launched in India on 15 August 1962. The history of its beginning has also been interesting. According to the Postal Department, there were many places in the country that had similar names. Due to this, it was becoming difficult to deliver letters, documents and other things. Pincode system was implemented to remove this confusion and to deliver things easily.

The credit for developing the pincode system goes to the Sanskrit poet and center worker Shriram Bhikaji Velankar. Know what is Pincode, what would be the meaning of 6 digit pincode and how it started…

What is the meaning of 6 digit pincode?

A 6 digit pin code is valid in the country. The meaning of the first number tells the direction of the state. The second digit denotes the zone. The third digit gives the information of the district. At the same time, the fourth, fifth and sixth digits tell the geographical location of the post office where the post office is located. Through pincode, letters and goods are delivered to the post office or courier agency. From here all this is sent to its address.

Pincodes have been allotted to 9 geographical areas in the country. In this, one point has been reserved for the Army Postal Service. According to the department, a total of 19101 pins have been allotted in the country. With the help of which their location can be known. It took a lot of effort to prepare it and implement it across the country.

Pincode prepared like this

Shri Ram Bhikaji had the idea of implementing Pincode in the country. At that time, he was working as an additional secretary in the Ministry of Communications and was also a senior member of the Telegraph Board. At that time, there was a need for such a system for the delivery of things in the country which could be easily implemented in every state. In such a situation, Bhikaji created such a system through pincode, which made it easy to deliver things anywhere in the country. A lot was told and understood about the location through the pincode. The importance of pincode has not diminished even in the era of GPS.

Bhikaji was also a well-known Sanskrit poet at that time. He wrote 105 books in Sanskrit and his play 'Viloma Kavya' is still called a master piece of Sanskrit literature.

His contribution during his tenure was significant. He was also the chairman after the World Philatelic Exhibition held in Delhi. In which 120 countries were included. He retired on 31 December 1973. He was also honored with many awards for his achievements.
