According to the legend, after the self-immolation of Sati, mother Adishakti was born as Goddess Parvati at the house of the mountain king Himalaya . He had love and devotion towards Lord Shiva in his mind. When she grew up, her father worried about her marriage. Narad ji told the mountain king Himalaya that Lord Vishnu wanted to marry Goddess Parvati. He was overjoyed at the proposal to make Lord Vishnu his son-in-law.
But when Goddess Parvati came to know about this, she got upset because she had accepted Lord Shiva as her husband and wished to get him in her husband's form. The friends of Parvati ji also knew all these things.
Then those friends took Goddess Parvati from the palace without informing anyone and hid it in a cave built in the middle of a dense forest. Goddess Parvati made a Shivling out of sand to get Lord Shiva and started worshiping him. He did severe penance and fasting for several hundred years to please Lord Shiva. Then one day Lord Shiva was pleased and appeared to him.
Shiva blessed Goddess Parvati to be accepted as his wife. After that Mata Parvati and Shiva got married. In this way, due to hard penance and fasting, Mother Parvati got the desired husband. Because of this, every year girls started fasting for Hartalika Teej to get the desired groom. In this way this fast was named Hartalika Teej. This year Hartalika Teej is on 30th August.
