Ganesh Chaturthi is also called Kalank Chaturthi as it is forbidden to see the moon on this day. Seeing the Moon on the Chaturthi of the Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month brings a person to face loss of honor in his life. This year, some people are celebrating Chauth festival or Kalank Chaturthi on 30 August and some people on 31 August. Actually, Chaturthi Tithi has started from the afternoon of 30th August and will remain till the afternoon of 31st August. In such a situation, it is better not to see the moon on both August 30 and August 31. Today, on August 31, the time for not seeing the moon is from 09:26 in the morning to 09:10 in the night.

According to mythology, once seeing the bloated stomach and gazmukh form of Ganesha, the moon laughed. Ganeshji got angry on this and he cursed the moon. He said that you are very proud of your appearance, so you will be destroyed and no one will see you. If anyone sees you, he will be stigmatized. Due to this curse, the size of the moon started decreasing, then the moon worshiped Shiva to get rid of the curse. Shiva advised Moon to worship Ganesha. Then Ganesh ji said that the effect of my curse will not end but I reduce its effect. By this you will decay for 15 days but after increasing you will attain complete form. Also, whoever sees you on the Chaturthi of the Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month will be tainted. Since then the Sun decreases for 15 days and rises for 15 days.
