Wild elephant found dead in Tamil Nadu village, both teeth missing, suspected of murder

An elephant was found dead in a village under the Anamalai Tiger Reserve in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu in the early hours of Monday, after which there was a stir.
Police said that the forest department officials who reached the spot noticed that both the teeth of the wild elephant were missing.

The police raised suspicion that the poachers killed the elephant to get the teeth. The Forest Department has formed special teams for further investigation to find out the cause of death. Forest department officials said they were yet to know whether poachers killed the elephant for its teeth or whether someone had extracted teeth from the dead elephant.

The forest department staff on Sunday found the carcass of an elephant dead near Mavadappu tribal settlement under Udumalpet division of ATR. Forest department sources said the body had started decomposing. It is believed that he died a few days ago. According to the information, the cause of death of the elephant can be ascertained only after the post-mortem.

ATR deputy director M.G. Ganesan said, “We could not make arrangements for the autopsy on Sunday due to the movement of elephants and heavy rains in the area. Because the teeth are missing, we suspect that the elephant has been poached. However, there is also a possibility that the elephant may have died of natural causes and then its teeth were extracted. "We are waiting for confirmation of the cause of death," he said. Senior officials of the forest department are present at the spot since Monday morning.
