It has been decided to name the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award after Major Dhyanchand, the highest honor given in the field of Indian sports.

PM Modi said, "Major Dhyan Chand was one of the leading sportspersons of India who brought honor and glory to India. It is true that the highest sporting honor of our country will be named after him.

He said, “I have been receiving many requests from citizens across India to name the Khel Ratna award after Major Dhyan Chand. Honoring his spirit, the Khel Ratna Award will be called the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award."

PM Modi further said, the men's and women's hockey teams have captured the imagination of our entire country with their exceptional performance. There is a renewed interest in hockey which is spreading across the length and breadth of India. This is a very positive sign for the times to come.

PM Modi further said that we are all overwhelmed by the great efforts of Indian players in the Olympic Games. The willpower shown by our sons and daughters especially in hockey, the ardor shown towards victory, is a great inspiration for the present and future generations.

This award was started in the year 1991-1992. Then it was named after the former Prime Minister of the country, Rajiv Gandhi. This award was established to appreciate the players and spread awareness about the game.

These players got this award in the year 2020

In the year 2020, this award was given to cricketer Rohit Sharma, Indian women's hockey team captain Rani Rampal, table tennis player Manika Batra and Paralympic high jump player Mariyappan Thangavelu.

Who was Major Dhyan Chand?

Major Dhyanchand, who is called the 'magician of hockey', got India the gold medal in the Olympics 3 times in a row. It is said that those who watched his matches felt that there was a magnet in his hockey. That's why once during the match, even his hockey was seen to be broken.
