When India became independent, at that time India did not have its own national anthem. Although Rabindranath Tagore wrote Jana Gana Mana in 1911 itself, it was adopted as the national anthem in 1950.

- In the night of 14-15 August, the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru was administered the oath of office by Lord Mountbatten, after which Nehru gave a historic speech.

On every Independence Day, the Indian Prime Minister hoists the flag from the Red Fort, but this did not happen on August 15, 1947. According to a research paper of the Lok Sabha Secretariat, Nehru hoisted the flag from the Red Fort on August 16, 1947.

The boundary line between India and Pakistan was not determined till August 15. This was decided on August 17 by the announcement of the Radcliffe Line which determined the boundaries of India and Pakistan.

Apart from India, 15 August is also the Independence Day of three other countries. South Korea became independent from Japan on August 15, 1945. Bahrain gained independence from Britain on 15 August 1971 and France declared Congo independent on 15 August 1960.
