World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2021: Why is it celebrated on 28 May? Know history and importance

Every woman in the world goes through the menstrual cycle, however, the need for hygiene is still met with silence and neglect.
There have been talks between people about this for a long time, but even today, there is a huge lack of awareness among many women about it. However, people keep talking about it in the coming days and now that it has reached a wide level, in such a situation, there is a movement in the whole world about menstruation. To create public awareness about menstrual hygiene, May 28 is celebrated as World Mental Hygiene Day 2021 every year.

The main purpose of marking this day is to change the social stigma and prohibition associated with menstruation. According to the search, in developing countries menstrual hygiene of women is limited to social norms, cost and availability. Because of this, girls going to school or college are forced to stay at home every month during the menstrual period.

Therefore, to create adequate awareness and education among girls and women regarding cleanliness, World Mental Hygiene Day 2021 was started. The special day was launched in 2014 through WASH United, a German-based NGO. Many people do not know the reason behind choosing 28 May as menstrual hygiene. On average, for most women, the menstrual cycle is 28 days and the period lasts for five days. In this way, the date of this special day was fixed.

History of World Mental Hygiene Day

In May 2013, German-based NGO Wash United launched a 28-day campaign on social media to create awareness about menstruation. This campaign attracted people and they decided to create a Global Awareness Day for menstruation. On 28 May 2014, for the first time, people across the world celebrated the day by organizing demonstrations, rallies, workshops, speeches and screenings.

Theme and purpose of World Mental Hygiene Day 2021
