Vat Savitri Vrat Story

Importance of Vat Savitri Vrat

It is believed that it was on the new moon day of the month of Jyeshtha that Savitri with her wisdom brought back the life of her husband Satyavan from Yamraj.

Vat Savitri Vrat is more popular in these cities

This fast is very popular in UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand. Here it is a tradition to celebrate it for three days from Jyeshtha Krishna Paksha Trayodashi to Amavasya. In South India, Vat Savitri Vrat (Vat Savirtri Vrat Date 2024) is celebrated on Jyeshtha Purnima in the name of Purnima.

On this day, worship is done under the Banyan tree. It is believed that just like the Banyan tree has a long life, similarly the life of the husband of the woman is also long.

Importance of Banyan tree in Ayurveda

The importance of every tree has been explained in our Ayurveda. Similarly, in Ayurveda, the Vat tree is considered the doctor of the family. Let us know what is the story for the worship of Vat Savitri Vrat.

According to the story of Savitri mentioned in the Puranas

King Ashwapati had only one child whose name was Savitri. Savitri married Satyavan, son of King Dyumatsena. But before the marriage, King Ashwapati was told by Narada ji that Satyavan's lifespan was short, yet Savitri did not back down from her decision. Savitri left all the royal luxuries in love for Satyavan and started living in the forest serving his family.

On the day of Satyavan's Mahaprayan, Satyavan went to the forest to cut wood. But he fell down unconscious and at the same time Yamraj came to take Satyavan's life.

Savitri, who had been fasting for three days, knew about that moment, so without any worry she kept praying to Yamraj to give Satyavan's life back, but despite all her efforts Yamraj did not agree.

After this Savitri started following him. Despite being refused a million times, she did not listen. After this, seeing Savitri's sacrifice and courage, Yamraj was pleased and asked her to ask for any three boons.

Savitri's first boon

After this, Savitri first asked for the sight of the eyes of Satyavan's blind parents.

Savitri's second boon

In the second boon, Savitri asked for her kingdom taken away from Yamraj.

Third boon

Savitri asked for 100 sons for herself as her third boon from Yamraj.

After saying 'Tathastu', Yamraj understood that it was not possible to take Savitri's husband with him. So he blessed Savitri with unbroken good fortune and disappeared from there leaving Satyavan behind. At that time Savitri was sitting under the Banyan tree with her husband.

Why is the rosary made of only 16 threads

On the day of Vat Savitri Vrat, women make a garland by wrapping raw cotton thread 16 times. They wear it around their neck for 16 hours. They also wrap the Raksha Sutra around the Vat tree 16 times. Doing this increases the lifespan of the husband.
