Sanjay Leela Bhansali had approached many stars for the character of Chunni Babu in Devdas. One of these actors was Manoj Bajpayee, but he turned down the film. In an interview given to Sushant Sinha, when Manoj Bajpayee was asked if he regrets rejecting a film, he took the name of Devdas and told the whole story. The actor said, yes I was offered Jackie Shroff's role in the film Devdas and I immediately refused. I told Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Sanjay yaar I always wanted to do Devdas. That film proved to be a superhit and I regret leaving it. I wanted to play the role of Devdas since my theater days. Since then I used to watch Dilip Kumar's films and read books. But I did not feel bad.

Ever since I saw Dilip Kumar's film (Devdas 1955) and read the book, I wanted to play the role of Devdas. It was my dream since my theater days. However, I did not feel bad.
