According to Amnesty International data, 1153 cases of death penalty were registered in 2023. There has been an increase of 31 percent compared to 2022. The organization has blamed Iran for this increase. In Iran, the authorities have increased the use of death penalty to instill fear in the population and strengthen their grip on power.
How many people have been sentenced to death in the world in the year 2023? Amnesty International has answered this question through its new figures. 1153 cases of death penalty were registered in 2023. There has been an increase of 31 percent in this as compared to 2022. Not only this, this is the largest figure recorded since 2015. In 2015, the organization had registered 1634 cases.
The organization has blamed Iran for this increase. The organization's secretary general has said that Iran has seen a rise in the number of capital punishment cases for drug-related crimes. This has had a discriminatory effect on Iran's most marginalized and poor communities. Saudi Arabia has already been included in this list, America has also come in the top 5 countries where the death penalty is given the most.
5 countries where more death sentences are given
According to Amnesty, five countries have given the highest number of death sentences in the year 2023. These include China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Somalia and America. 74 percent of the death penalty cases have been reported in Iran. 853 people have been sentenced to death. Whereas 15 percent of the cases were registered in Saudi Arabia. Here 172 people were sentenced to death. In America, the same number is 24. Death penalty to women was given the highest number in four countries. 24 in China, Iran, 6 in Saudi Arabia and 1 in Singapore.
Data for China and North Korea not available
Amnesty says that the highest number of death sentences are given in China. But there are no official figures on the number of death sentences given in China. If the organization's estimate is to be believed, thousands of people were given death penalty in China last year.
Like China, Amnesty could not access official data for North Korea, Vietnam, Syria, Palestinian territories and Afghanistan.
Amnesty also found in its report that the death penalty has increased by 20 percent globally in 2023. This is the largest number of death sentences given since 2018.
Why did the incidents of hanging increase in Iran
Authorities in Iran have stepped up the use of the death penalty to instill fear in the population and consolidate their grip on power. Executions were carried out across the country. At least 853 people were executed. This is a 48% increase from 576 in 2022. The executions disproportionately affected Iran's Baluchi ethnic minority. 20% of people from these communities were executed even though they make up only about 5% of Iran's population. At least 24 women and at least five men who were children at the time of the crime were also not spared.
Cruel methods adopted in America
A handful of US states have taken serious steps toward capital punishment, using brutal methods such as nitrogen asphyxiation. In Alabama, Kenneth Smith was shamefully executed using this method earlier this year, just 14 months after a failed attempt. The organization says President Joe Biden should stop delaying his promise to abolish the federal death penalty.
In which countries has it been abolished?
Human rights activists oppose the death penalty to prevent cases where it is discovered after the death sentence that the accused was innocent. But despite this, it is on the rise. But there are some countries where it has been abolished.
In the year 1991, 48 countries were included in this list. At the same time, the number of countries abolishing the death penalty in 2023 increased to 112. There are nine countries where death penalty is given only for serious crimes, while there are 23 countries where death penalty has not been used in the last decade.
