Symptoms of Wilson's disease

Dr. Shivani Deswal says that the symptoms of Wilson's disease depend on which part of your body is affected. Symptoms may vary depending on different organs, for example, if your liver is affected by this disease, you may feel symptoms like weakness, fatigue, weight loss, nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite.

Which people are most at risk?

People who have a family history of Wilson's disease are the highest risk factor. Especially people whose parents, siblings or children have this disease are at higher risk of getting this disease. People suffering from Wilson's disease usually develop symptoms when they are between 5 and 40 years of age.

What to eat and who to stay away from

People suffering from Wilson's disease should consume diets which have low copper content like dairy products, rice, porridge, tea, coffee and lemonade. One should avoid such things in which copper is found in large quantities, such as nuts, mushrooms, shellfish, chocolate and cocoa etc.

Test for Wilson's disease

To diagnose Wilson's disease, tests are done on the basis of different organs. To measure the level of copper through blood flow, tests like ceruloplasmin blood test, copper urine test, liver function test, ultrasound, PT/INR test and MRI are done.
