Flight delayed by one and a half hour, now Air India will give Rs 3.85 lakh compensation

Flight getting delayed due to fog may seem like a normal thing to you, but do you know that Air India will now have to pay a compensation of Rs 3.85 lakh due to the flight getting delayed by about 1.5 hours. What is this whole matter after all...

Nowadays, you must be reading news of flight delay due to fog everywhere. Some flights in Delhi are getting delayed by up to 12 hours. But flight delay has cost Air India a lot. Now the company will have to pay Rs 3.85 lakh as compensation to the customer just for the flight being delayed by 1.5 hours.

Actually this matter is 20 years old. A manager of a government bank booked an Air India flight, but it was delayed by about 1.5 hours. Because of this he missed his second connecting flight. The matter reached the consumer court. Now the National Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission has ordered Air India to pay compensation in this matter.

Now after 20 years, Air India will pay a total of Rs 3.85 lakh to the person including compensation of Rs 1.75 lakh, expenses of legal action of Rs 25,000 and interest at the rate of 6% on this.

The journey was from Thiruvananthapuram to Dibrugarh.

In which case an order has been given to give compensation to Air India. The bank manager and his three family members were traveling from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala to Dibrugarh in Assam. For this, he had booked 4 Air India tickets on 13 December 2003.

The bank manager first had to complete the journey from Thiruvananthapuram to Chennai, Chennai to Kolkata and Kolkata to Dibrugarh. In this, his very first flight reached Chennai with a delay of about one and a half hour because it was diverted to Coimbatore. Due to this he missed his flight to Kolkata.

This is how Air India handled the matter

Air India then handled this matter very lightly. He first booked a flight for the family to Kolkata via Bengaluru. After this, the family booked a hotel for the couple in Bengaluru. Then sent it to Kolkata from there. The company booked tickets for the Delhi-Dibrugarh flight with Kolkata halt to send the family from Kolkata to Dibrugarh, but this connecting flight never reached Kolkata.

According to ET news, after this the family had to stay at Kolkata Airport for a long time without breakfast and lunch. After that the flight to Dibrugarh got cancelled. After this, the next day he was sent from Kolkata to Dibrugarh. The family was to start the journey on 18 December and reach Dibrugarh on 19 December 2003. But in this confusion he reached Dibrugarh on 20th December.

The hearing of this case started in the District Consumer Court on 30 September 2011, the final decision of which has now come.
