The army has attacked a camp built for displaced people in the north-east area of Myanmar. At least 29 people, including many children, are reported to have been killed in this attack. The camp is located in an area controlled by the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO). This organization is counted among the ethnic rebel groups of Myanmar which have been fighting for their rights for decades.
It is being told that such a deadly attack has happened in Kachin after about 63 years. Myanmar has been embroiled in conflict in many areas for the last two years. According to sources, this is one of the deadliest attacks on civilians since the return of military rule in Myanmar. The shadow National Unity Government (NUG) has blamed the army for the shooting. It is being told that this attack was carried out at midnight on Monday.
Kachin officials say they have stepped up attacks on KIO-held areas due to growing support for other rebel groups fighting the military government. Much of Myanmar is embroiled in a widespread civil war after a military coup in 2021 ousted the country's elected government.
Increase in air strikes after army occupation
After taking power, the army has intensified air strikes on towns and areas controlled by the opposition. It is being told that after the bomb fell on the camp, the explosion was so dangerous that the entire town seemed to shake. Residents came out of their homes immediately after the explosion.
Army extended the time of emergency by 6 months
In Myanmar, which had carried out a coup in 2021, the army there has extended the period of emergency by 6 months in July this year. Emergency in the country was to end on July 31. Earlier, army officials had held a meeting and announced to extend the emergency. With this announcement, the elections to be held in August were also postponed.
