Hartalika Teej is the most special and difficult among all the three Teejs falling in the year. During this period, married women keep a waterless fast for 24 hours. But what is the reason for this, let us know.

Hartalika Teej has special significance in Sanatan Dharma. Out of the three fasts of Teej observed in the year, this fast is considered to be the most difficult. On this day, married women observe a waterless fast for 24 hours to get the blessings of unbroken good fortune. Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati are worshiped on this day. By worshiping Lord Shiva and Parvati as per the rituals, marital life becomes happy and the husband gets long life and healthy life.

There was a lot of confusion this year regarding Hartalika Teej because Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada is starting from today i.e. 17th September and will last till 18th September. In such a situation, the only question in people's mind was on which day the fast would be observed. Udayatithi has more importance in Teej festivals, hence the fast of Hartalika Teej will be observed on 18th September only.

Importance of Hartalika Teej

Hartalika Teej is considered very important for the happy married life of husband and wife. According to mythological beliefs, Mother Parvati first observed the fast of Hartalika Teej to get Lord Shiva as her husband. Hartalika is made up of two words. Har and Alika. Har means to abduct and table means friend.

According to the legend, Mother Parvati's father wanted to marry her to Lord Vishnu but she wanted to marry Lord Shiva. In such a situation, her friends abducted her and took her to a cave, where she performed rigorous penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband. Lord Shiva was pleased with the penance of Mother Parvati and accepted her as his wife. Mother Parvati had sacrificed everything - food and water - to get Lord Shiva as her husband. Therefore, there is a tradition of observing waterless fast on Hartalika Teej.

Unmarried girls also keep fast

Hartalika Teej fast is observed by married women as well as unmarried girls. It is believed that by fasting on this day and worshiping Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati, one gets special blessings and one gets the desired groom.
