Tobacco contains 60 types of toxic substances including nicotine. According to a government website working on cancer, of the more than 7,000 chemicals in tobacco smoke, at least 250 are known to be harmful. These include hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide and ammonia. Tobacco reaches the blood and lungs through bidi, cigarette, gutkha. This produces tar (organic chemical) which sticks to the lungs. This reduces the ability of the lung cells to absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide. Gradually the process reaches cancer.
