Amazon to invest Rs 1,05,600 crore in cloud infrastructure in India, this is the plan

Investment in data center basic infrastructure in India will support an average of 1,31,700 full time equivalent (FTE) jobs in Indian businesses every year.

Amazon Web Services plans to invest $12.7 billion in cloud infrastructure in India by 2030, as it aims to meet the growing customer demand for cloud services in the country. Amazon's cloud computing unit Amazon Web Services (AWS) says that investment in basic infrastructure of data centers in India will create an average of 1,31,700 jobs every year in the Indian business. Data centers including construction, facility maintenance, engineering, telecom and other jobs in India will become part of the supply chain.

AWS said it plans to invest Rs 1,05,600 crore (US$12.7 billion) in cloud infrastructure in India and its long-term commitment in the country will reach Rs 1,36,500 crore (US$16.4 billion) by 2030. This investment is estimated to contribute Rs 1,94,700 crore ($23.3 billion) to India's total GDP by 2030.

According to Amazon Web Services, its investments in India have an impact on the local economy in areas such as workforce development, training and skill opportunities, community engagement and sustainability initiatives. The company has two data center infrastructure sectors in India – AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai) Sector, launched in 2016 and AWS Asia Pacific (Hyderabad) Sector, launched in November 2022.

The two AWS Sectors are designed to provide Indian customers with multiple options to run workloads with high availability, securely store data in India, and serve end users with low latency. AWS has invested over Rs 30,900 crore in the AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai) region between 2016 and 2022. This includes both capital and operational expenses associated with building, maintaining and operating data centers in that region.

Investment will motivate digital economy

According to Central Electronics and Information Technology, the country's Modi government is driving the expansion of cloud and data centers in India under Digital India. The new investment will motivate India's digital economy. MeitY is also working on a cloud and data center policy to catalyze the innovation, sustainability and growth of cloud.

These companies run workloads on AWS

The company found in a survey that millions of its customers in India run their workloads on AWS to save costs, accelerate innovation and increase speed to market. This includes government organizations such as the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, public health institutions such as Aarogyasri Health Care Trust, large Indian enterprises such as Ashok Leyland, Axis Bank, HDFC Life and Titan, small and medium businesses such as Havmor, Cube. Cinema and Narayana Netralaya, well-known start-ups like BankBazaar, HirePro, M2P and Yubi, etc.
