On International Women's Day at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) Neurologist, Padma Shri Dr (Prof) M.V. Padma Srivastava said that stroke is the second biggest cause of death in India. There are about 1,85,000 stroke cases in the country every year, about one stroke every 40 seconds and one stroke death every 4 minutes. An important report by the Stroke Project of GBD 2010 states that 31% of stroke cases occur in children under the age of 20 years. The burden of stroke is high in India and the highest number of cases are seen among young and middle-aged people.

Need to adopt telemedicine

Dr. Padma Srivastava said that despite these alarming statistics, many poor Indian neighborhoods lack the infrastructure needed to quickly and efficiently treat stroke patients. Professor Padma Srivastava said that one of the main and easy ways to overcome the shortage in stroke treatment in poor and rich areas is to adopt telestroke and telemedicine. It will be possible to connect poor and rural areas with major cities of the country in stroke care.

Dr. Jayshree Sood of the Institute of Anaesthesiology of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital said that there is a high risk of brain stroke in women too. In such a situation, they need to maintain a balance between work and life. Professor Kusum Verma, Department of Cytopathology, spoke on her experiences reducing professional challenges. Doctors said that by identifying the symptoms of brain stroke on time, deaths due to this disease can be reduced.
