Union Budget 2023-24: '...first clean your face with Dettol', Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman lashes out at Congress in Lok Sabha

Union Budget 2023-24: During the general discussion on the Union Budget 2023-24 in the Lok Sabha on Friday (February 10), Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman strongly attacked the Congress. Actually, Congress MPs were making allegations against the Modi government regarding corruption. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that Congress leaders should wash their face with 'Dettol' before talking about corruption.

Is Congress talking about corruption?

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that you (Congress) are talking about corruption? Sitharaman was talking about the increased prices of petrol and diesel in non-BJP states. Addressing Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, he said that he should ask Himachal government why they increased VAT by Rs 3 on diesel immediately after winning the election.

Punjab increased the prices of petrol and diesel

He commented on the increase in the prices of petrol and diesel in Punjab. Sitharaman said that in February 2023, the Punjab government increased petrol and diesel by 90 paise a litre. It is not decreasing. He also increased the cess on petrol and diesel by Rs 2 in Kerala. Sitharaman said that some states have reduced money a little, while many states have not reduced money at all on petrol and diesel.

These states did not reduce the prices

The Finance Minister said, West Bengal did not reduce the prices of petrol and diesel, Tamil Nadu reduced some prices, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala and Jharkhand did not reduce the prices of petrol and diesel. Sitharaman rejected the opposition's allegations of cutting food and fertilizer subsidies. He said that the additional expenditure on fertilizer import was not imposed on the farmers even before and the farmers are not being burdened in this budget also.

The Finance Minister said that PM Modi's government has given relief to the people by reducing excise duty on petrol-diesel twice in November 2021 and June 2022. On reading last year's budget by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot in the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly, Sitharaman said that everything is going wrong there.
