Kolkata: 520 meter tunnel built under Hooghly river in 66 days, metro will run from April!

The 520 meter long metro tunnel under the Hooghly river between Howrah and Kolkata has been completed in a record 66 days. It will work to connect Howrah station to Kolkata.

Kolkata: The trial run of the metro train on the Esplanade-Howrah Maidan section of the East-West Metro under the Hooghly river may begin in the second week of April. Under the leadership of Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC), a 520 meter long metro tunnel has been constructed under the Hooghly river in a record 66 days . It connects Howrah station in West Bengal and Armenian Ghat in the east. The first trial run with the last phase of the 16.6 km corridor was targeted to start in November last year, but it has been delayed due to the Bowbazar accident, first in May and then in October last year.

Since then efforts are on to conduct trial runs between Esplanade and Howrah Maidan Terminal station. The construction between Esplanade and Howrah Maidan has been completed and the stations are also ready for operation.

According to the information received, it will be ready for operation in July, except for the Mahakaran station, which is currently being finalized. The Metro Railway GM had earlier this month said that efforts are on to start a short service between Howrah Maidan and Esplanade on the East-West Metro corridor by the end of this year if the Sealdah-Esplanade section does not happen. However, officials involved in the project pointed out that even after successful trials, the Bowbazar section could present a challenge. They say that for regular train operation between Esplanade and Howrah Maidan, at least one tunnel between Esplanade and Sealdah will have to be built so that the rakes can be moved to the Central Park depot for regular maintenance.

At present, metro service is running from Sealdah to Sector V.

According to railway officials, the work to connect the twin tunnels with the vent shaft at Subodh Mullick Square was going on since April 1 last year, but the work slowed down after that. Officials are currently weighing a ground freezing method to strengthen the soil so that the twin tunnels can be connected to the vent shaft at Subodh Malik Square. The soil character in this area is similar to that of Durga Pituri Lane in Bowbazar, where houses caved in for the first time on August 31, 2019. Let us tell you that East-West Metro now runs short services from Sector V to Sealdah with a distance of 9 km. As the tunnel on the west side is incomplete, trains between Phoolbagan and Sealdah are being run through the tunnel on the east side.
