India is getting richer… craze for expensive smartphones increased, the sale of cheap phones fell so much

Expensive Phone:
Only iPhone has 60 percent share in the market of expensive phones in India. Indian users are giving a lot of preference to expensive smartphones in the matter of buying a new smartphone. At the same time, users are being saved from buying cheap phones.

Indian Smartphone Shipment: Last year's figures for the country's smartphone market were mixed. Where on one side the craze of expensive phones is being seen, on the other hand the shipment of cheap phones has decreased. In the smartphone shipment in 2022, the shipment of cheap mobiles from Rs 8,000 has come down to 46 percent, which was 54 percent last year. At the same time, the total shipment of smartphones has reached 144 million after a decline of 10 percent. If we talk about expensive phones, then the popularity of Apple iPhone is intact, and most of its shipments are happening in expensive phones.

Talking about the December 2022 quarter, there has been a decrease of 27 percent in mobile shipments as compared to 2021. During this, only 3 crore phones have been shipped. This information has been revealed in the latest report of International Data Center (IDC). According to IDC, most users are not buying new smartphones because the price of phones has increased. Apart from this, due to not having much choice in the segment of cheap mobiles, users are avoiding buying a new phone.

That's why the decline in cheap phones

The lack of new launches in the cheap phone segment has created hurdles for the users to buy a new smartphone. Because of this, there has also been a decrease in the overall shipment of smartphones. At the same time, due to the economic recession, most of the smartphone brands have increased the focus on expensive smartphones to earn profits. The price of smartphones has also increased due to the continuous new launches in this segment and increasing cost.

Increase in shipment of expensive phones

According to IDC, in 2022, the average selling price (ASP) of smartphones in India, ie the average selling price, increased by 18 percent to about Rs 18,000. Shipments of low-cost phones from around Rs 25,000 fell by 15 per cent, but the mid-premium segment (around Rs 25,000-40,000) saw a 20 per cent increase. Apart from this, an increase of 55 percent has been registered in the premium smartphone segment (expensive from about Rs 40,000).

Apple iPhone dominance

Apple is in a good position in the premium segment with phones costing more than Rs 40,000. Due to the strong demand for iPhone 13, the company has made a good inroads in this segment. The iPhone accounts for 60 percent of the premium segment's shipments. At the same time, in 2022, the iPhone 13 has emerged as the third most shipped smartphone.
