IPL 2021: Chennai Super King Reach Top In Point Table After Beating Sunrisers Hyderabad

The winning streak of Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2021 continues.
On 28 April, the team captained by Mahendra Singh Dhoni defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by seven wickets. The target of 172 runs was achieved by CSK with 9 balls remaining from the half-centuries of Rituraj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessi. Gaikwad scored 75 runs off 44 balls with 12 fours, while Du Plessi smashed 56 off 38 balls with six fours and a six. Rashid Khan took all three wickets for Hyderabad. Batting first, Hyderabad scored 171 for three with half-centuries from Manish Pandey (61) and David Warner (57).

Warner completed 200 sixes in the IPL during this innings. Along with this, he also scored 50th half-century in the IPL and became the fourth batsman to complete 10,000 runs in T20 cricket. Chris Gayle, Karen Pollard and Shoaib Malik have achieved this feat before them. Lungi Engidi took the most two wickets for CSK. This is CSK's fifth win in six matches. He now tops the points table. Royal Challengers Bangalore have the same number of points but due to better net run rate, Chennai team is on top. The Sunrisers team are in the last spot with two points after their fifth defeat in six matches. At the same time, Hyderabad has suffered a fifth defeat in six matches.

Chennai's stormy opening

The Superkings, who came to chase the target, got a stormy start by du Plessi and Gaekwad duo. Du Plessi targeted Khalil Ahmed, hitting him with three fours. Gaikwad also hit fours on Sandeep Sharma and Siddharth Kaul. The Superkings team managed to score 50 runs without losing wickets in the power play. Gaikwad hit Jagdish Suchit two fours while Du Plessi hit a four and a six in this spinner's over. Du Plessi completed the half-century off 32 balls with two runs off Kaul's ball and took the team's score to 100 runs in the 11th over.

Gaikwad hit Suchit three consecutive fours in the next over and during this, he completed a half-century in 36 balls. However, he was lucky in the next over of Rashid Khan (three wickets for 36 runs), while wicketkeeper Johnny Bairstow failed to catch his catch. Gaikwad also hit three fours in this over but was bowled on the last ball. Between the two, a 129-run partnership of the first wicket was formed. Moin Ali (15) opened the account with four boundaries on Khalil and then hit two fours on Rashid, but caught the leg of the same leg-spinner in the air and caught Jadhav. Rashid also bowled Duplessis on the next ball. The Superkings needed 24 runs to win in the final five overs and Suresh Raina (17 not out) and Ravindra Jadeja (07 not out) gave the team an easy lead.

Warner-Pandey hit half-century for Hyderabad

Earlier, a half-century between Manish Pandey and captain David Warner and a century partnership between the two, Sunrisers Hyderabad scored 171 runs for three wickets. Pandey scored 61 runs in 46 balls with five fours and a six, besides sharing a 106-run partnership for the second wicket with Warner (57 off 55 balls, three fours, two sixes). Kane Williamson (26 not out from 10 balls) and Kedar Jadhav (12 not out from four balls) batted in the last over. The Sunrisers team managed to add 89 runs in the last eight overs.

David Warner won the toss and decided to bat first. Johnny Bairstow was lucky on the second ball of Deepak Chahar's innings when his catch was dropped by wicketkeeper captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Bairstow and Warner hit Chahar in the third over. Bairstow, however, was caught by Chahar in an attempt to play a big shot off the ball of Sam Karan (one wicket for 30 runs). He scored seven runs. Manish Pandey opened the account with a four on Chahar and then got Karan's ball to the boundary. Sunrisers scored 39 runs for one wicket in the power play.

Warner completed his 50th half-century with a six

Pandey and Warner failed to increase the run pace. Pandey hit the first six of the innings on Moin Ali in the 10th over. Pandey hit a four off Ravindra Jadeja after hitting a four off Shardul Thakur and then completed a half-century in 35 balls with a run. The century of the Sunrisers' runs was completed in the 14th over. Warner hit his first six off the ball of Engidi (two for 35) and then completed his 50th IPL half-century in 50 balls with a six over Jadeja. Warner, however, caught Jadeja in an attempt to play a big shot off the ball of Engidi.

Pandey hit a four on Engidi but in an attempt to play another big shot, Faf du Plessis caught his brilliant catch on the boundary. Williamson hit three fours and six off Thakur's successive balls to bring the team score to 150 runs in the 19th over. Jadhav hit a four and a six off Karan on the last two balls of the innings.
